Lanzarote – Lava & Waves

16.03.2027. - 23.03.2027.

STATUS: Open for Booking
An island born from fire, shaped by the ocean and painted in black, red and white. Lanzarote is not your typical Canary Islands holiday. This is a road trip through volcanic craters, underground tunnels, vineyards planted in black ash and villages that look as though someone sketched them in the middle of the desert. We travel in rental cars, learn to surf the Atlantic waves, cross over to La Graciosa and seek out places the big tour buses never reach. Eight days. Two islands. No rush, but no standing still. It is time to go BYND the Volcano.

Description
Over eight days, we will explore Lanzarote by car and discover its best-known volcanic landscapes, hidden beaches, art, food and laid-back island atmosphere. We will visit Timanfaya National Park, the green lagoon of El Golfo, the volcanic coastline of Los Hervideros and the unusual vineyards of La Geria. We will descend into the volcanic tunnels of Cueva de los Verdes, discover the unique world of César Manrique and look out towards La Graciosa from Mirador del Río before crossing over by ferry. We will explore the roadless island on electric bikes. In Famara, we will get the chance to try surfing, spend Sunday morning among the stalls and street performers of Teguise and choose our own adventure on the final day – Fuerteventura, a catamaran cruise, kayaking, a buggy ride or time to unwind on the beaches of Papagayo. One island base, rental cars, six full days of exploring and enough freedom to adapt the plan to the weather, the waves and the mood of the group.

Day 1 - ZAGREB – LANZAROTE

TOWARDS THE VOLCANOES

We meet at Zagreb Airport and fly to Lanzarote. Upon arrival, we collect our rental cars and drive to Puerto del Carmen, our base for the entire trip. After checking into the apartment complex, there is time to relax following the flight.

In the evening, we head out to explore the town and get our first taste of Canarian food, local wines and island atmosphere. Overnight stay.

Day 2 - LANZAROTE – VOLCANO, VALLEYS, VINEYARDS

WHERE THE EARTH ONCE BURNED

Breakfast. We get into our cars and head towards the south-west of the island, entering a landscape that looks more like another planet than Spain. We visit Timanfaya National Park, formed by powerful volcanic eruptions during the 18th century. We pass through a landscape of craters, petrified rivers of lava and ground that remains hot enough just beneath the surface to ignite dry grass.

We continue to the green lagoon of Charco de los Clicos, set between the black volcanic sand and red cliffs of El Golfo. Next come the dramatic volcanic coastline of Los Hervideros and the traditional salt pans of Salinas de Janubio.

We end the day in the wine-growing region of La Geria, where vines are cultivated in hollows dug into black volcanic ash. We visit a local winery and taste wines produced in one of Europe’s most unusual vineyard landscapes. Return to the apartment complex and a free evening. Overnight stay.

Day 3 - LANZAROTE – LAVA TUNNELS, SEA VILLAGES

BENEATH THE SURFACE OF LANZAROTE

Breakfast. Today, we explore the north of the island and the vast network of volcanic tunnels formed by eruptions of La Corona volcano. We enter Cueva de los Verdes, part of a tunnel stretching for several kilometres, carved by lava as it flowed towards the ocean. Next is Jameos del Agua, where artist and architect César Manrique brought together a volcanic cave, water, architecture and art.

We stop in the fishing village of Punta Mujeres, known for its natural pools formed along the volcanic coastline. If the weather and ocean conditions allow, there will be time for a quick swim. We continue inland to the whitewashed town of Haría, set in the Valley of a Thousand Palms, and then to Mirador del Río, a viewpoint high above the ocean overlooking La Graciosa and the surrounding islets. Return to Puerto del Carmen and a free evening. Overnight in Lanzarote.

Day 4 - LANZAROTE – LA GRACIOSA

THE ISLAND WITHOUT TARMAC

Breakfast. We drive to the northern village of Órzola, leave our cars at the harbour and board the ferry to La Graciosa. After approximately half an hour at sea, we arrive in Caleta de Sebo, one of the few places in Europe almost entirely without paved roads. We spend the day exploring the volcanic landscapes, sandy tracks and remote beaches of the smallest inhabited Canary Island.

We explore the island on electric bikes, making it easier to cover greater distances while still relying on our legs for power. Depending on weather conditions, we head towards Las Conchas or Playa Francesa and the volcanic formation of Montaña Amarilla. There is free time for lunch, a swim or simply slowing down in Caleta de Sebo. In the afternoon, we return to Lanzarote by ferry and drive back to the apartment complex. Overnight in Lanzarote.

Day 5 - LANZAROTE – FAMARA

CHASING WAVES

Breakfast. We head to the west coast and Caleta de Famara, a surfing village set between the Atlantic and the towering cliffs of Risco de Famara. Today’s main challenge is a surf lesson designed for complete beginners as well as those with some experience. After a short introduction, safety briefing and equipment fitting, we enter the ocean and try to catch our first waves. Those who prefer not to surf can walk along the long beach, explore the village or simply enjoy the view.

After the activity, there is free time for lunch at one of the local restaurants and a chance to relax in Famara. In the afternoon, we visit LagOmar, an extraordinary house carved into the volcanic rock and associated with the name of Omar Sharif. Return to the apartment complex. The evening is free to enjoy the restaurants, bars and nightlife of Puerto del Carmen. Overnight stay.

Day 6 - LANZAROTE – TEGUISE – ARRECIFE

MARKET, ART & MOJO

Breakfast. Sunday morning is reserved for Teguise, the former capital of Lanzarote. Every Sunday, its quiet streets become the island’s largest market, filled with local produce, food, handicrafts, music and street performers.

After exploring Teguise, there is free time for lunch and an opportunity to discover the local cuisine independently, including the traditional Canarian sauces mojo rojo and mojo verde. In the afternoon, we continue to Arrecife, the island’s capital. We walk along the Charco de San Ginés lagoon, pass through the old town and leave time for coffee, tapas or a drink by the water. Return to the apartment complex and a free evening. Overnight in Lanzarote.

Day 7 - LANZAROTE – FREE TIME

YOUR ADVENTURE

Breakfast. We leave our final full day flexible. Spend it by the pool, on the beach or in Puerto del Carmen, or join us for one of the optional activities. One possibility is a ferry trip to Fuerteventura, where we explore Corralejo, its vast sand dunes and the volcanic northern coastline.

Those who prefer to stay in Lanzarote can choose a catamaran cruise towards the beaches of Papagayo, kayaking, diving, a buggy adventure through the volcanic interior or paragliding above the island landscapes. For a more relaxed end to the trip, spend the day exploring the hidden coves of southern Lanzarote and the beaches of Papagayo by car.

In the evening, we come together again for a farewell dinner. One final Canarian wine, one final round of tapas and a look back at everything we have experienced – from lava and underground tunnels to the Atlantic and La Graciosa. Overnight in Lanzarote.

Day 8 - LANZAROTE – ZAGREB

¡ADIÓS, LANZAROTE!

Early departure from the apartment complex and drive to the airport. Flight to Zagreb. We return with the scent of the ocean in our clothes, volcanic sand that we will still be finding in our trainers for weeks and proof that sometimes you do not need a spaceship to visit another planet.

End of the journey. Until next time.
